Welcoming Sakura the Red Panda

Sakura, a female Red Panda, joins Arun, our male, at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. They are both a part of the important Species Survival Plan (SSP) for Red Pandas. Sakura comes to us from the Calgary Zoo, another CAZA accredited zoo in Canada.

Sakura has finished her quarantine (I think we’re all familiar with that word now!) and is now out in the Red Panda enclosure with Arun. They are having a great time getting to know each other so far!

Red pandas are endemic to the forests of southern China, northern India, Myanmar, and Nepal. They are listed as endangered by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Thankfully the SSP has given us a breeding recommendation, so hopefully we can add to this precious species.

Red pandas have reddish-brown fur, a waddling gate due to their shorter front legs, and a long fluffy tail that they use for balance navigating the treetops and wrap it around their bodies for warmth at night.
