The start of summer has been an exciting time for us here at the zoo! The release of our new cougar kittens have kept us busy and now with Canada Day around the corner, it’s about to get even more zoo-tastic!
The Greater Vancouver Zoo will be celebrating Canada Day with not one, but two days of fun-filled activities you do not want to miss. We have a variety of interactive family-friendly activities, such as welcoming back of our beloved train, the opening of our train station in honour of one of our most dedicated volunteers, and the start of a new family-fun activity.

Choo Choo – Welcome the Train Back to the Zoo
Since we retired our train back in October of 2017, there have been continuous questions about when the Zoo’s cherished cornerstone will be back. We have been working tirelessly with Industrial Engine, Alder Steel, and Burrard Inlet Rail to refurbish the train for all our enthusiastic train-loving guests.
Thanks to everyone’s hard work and tireless efforts, we are happy to announce this locomotive will be chugging back to life for all our guests to enjoy on July 2nd. Brian Mason, President of Burrard Inlet Rail says: “We are pleased to respond to the Zoo’s request to upgrade the track structure and ensure safety at the highest level. I’m impressed with the Zoo’s effort to improve the entire facility and I look forward to seeing the train in action, creating new memories while bringing back a cherished part of the complete Zoo experience.”
Celebrate the Life and Contribution of Hugh Lavery at Hugh Station
In memory of one of our most dedicated volunteers, our updated train station has been renamed to Hugh Station in honour of Hugh Lavery. Hugh volunteered with the Zoo for over 12 years where his passion for trains and people came to life. Known by the GV Zoo members as “Poppa Hughie”, Hugh was actively involved with our volunteer program and always shared his motto with the Zoo team: “when you are out with guests you smile”.
On July 2nd, the GV Zoo invites all those who knew and loved Hugh or those who wish to experience the community of the GV Zoo to join us in the ribbon cutting to officially open Hugh Station. At 10:30 AM on July 2nd, join us and members of Hugh's family to cut the ribbon and kick off the new train for service.
Interact With Your Favourite Farm Animals at Our New Family Farmyard
July 1st marks the day we launch our new interactive activity – the Family Farmyard. A variety of new farm animals will be coming to the zoo, including rabbits, sheep, goats, chickens, and geese! Families will get hands-on experience and a chance to learn about our animals in a safe and interactive environment.
