CARIBOU CONSERVATION BREEDING FOUNDATION

Woodland caribou, one of North America’s most iconic species, are spiralling towards extinction. The challenges they face are growing and many populations are dwindling towards extirpation. Habitat protection and restoration measures, while key to the recovery of caribou, are not effective enough in the short term to reverse population declines and preserve the most vulnerable populations.

Conservation breeding can support caribou recovery by conserving individuals from non-viable herds and reinforcing viable herds. It also opens the possibility of future reintroduction to historic range, assuming the factors that have led to the extirpation of the herd are corrected. -CCBF

GVZoo & CCBF

The Greater Vancouver Zoo supports the creation of conservation breeding programs for the recovery of the most vulnerable caribou populations. Caribou advocates are varied, but all share the dream of saving caribou. Some may be actively involved in caribou recovery, some may not yet. CCBF is working to identify and bring together caribou advocates to build a community focused on conservation breeding and build a brighter future for caribou.

“Caribou and the ecosystems they live in need help more than ever. Collectively, we can mitigate threats to their recovery through habitat protection and boost their population through conservation breeding.”

— Menita Prasad, Animal Care Manager, Greater Vancouver Zoo

Ecosystems around the world are being degraded at an unprecedented rate and biodiversity is vanishing. Caribou and the ecosystems they live in need help more than ever. Collectively, we can mitigate threats to their recovery through habitat protection and boost their populations through conservation breeding. Caribou are an umbrella species for their habitat. An umbrella species is a species which indirectly protects many other species that make up its ecological community and is a great indicator of the health of that community. Therefore caribou recovery must be prioritized, not just for the sake of the caribou themselves, but for the many other species of plants and animals that share their habitat.
