08/22 ~ GET CHILLED - Official Opening of the Arctic Section

PRESS RELEASE

Date: August 22, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aldergrove – The Arctic section at the Greater Vancouver Zoo has been expanding and is welcoming all guests to visit our new residents to this section. Come by to “get a little chilled” and enjoy a “free freezee” (as supplies last) at 1:30 pm on Saturday August 23 2008.

A pair of Muskox moved into their new home (approximately 32,000 square feet) on Tuesday August 19th and so far their neighbors have been watching them closely. The Arctic Wolves which are a safe distance away (separated with two electrical fences and area of open space) are the only wild predator of the Muskox, nearby the wolves the Arctic Foxes have been extremely curious as well. The foxes moved into their new enclosure in April of this year and have settled in nicely.

Muskox have an outer coat of dark guard hair to repel rain and snow; as well as a fine, soft inner coat which is so dense that cold or frost cannot penetrate it. They are able to withstand extreme cold temperatures around -40° C, as a result of their amazing coat.

In addition to the muskox, wolves and foxes; the Zoo has Reindeer, Emperor Geese and Snow Geese that complete the arctic section. On Wednesday August 20th, the Zoo celebrated their 38th anniversary as well.
